Tribute
to Mr Ali Foum Mgeni
SCI would like to join colleagues and family in mourning the loss of
our friend and collaborator Mr Ali Foum Mgeni who sadly passed away on
the 27th December 2007 as the result of a road traffic accident in
Zanzibar.
Successful Mass
Drug Administration across Tanzania
The last quarter of 2007 brought to a successful close the second
treatment campaign of the National Schistosomiasis and Soil-transmitted
helminth Control Programme (NSSCP) which targeted school-aged children
and, for the first time, communities residing in the highest prevalence
districts in Tanzania.

SCI Wins Queen's Aniversary Prize
The
SCI has won a Queen's Anniversary Prize for its programme, which has in
just five years administered over 43 million treatments for
schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths in countries such as
Niger and Burkina Faso. SCI Participation at 56th Annual ASTMH Meeting in
Philadelphia
The 56th American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene
(ASTMH) Annual Meeting was held during the 4-8 November of 2007 in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Several SCI staff and country
collaborators attended and many of them gave presentations.
SCI, Imperial College London and Rockhopper Productions to prepare
documentaries for BBC World
Imperial College has been awarded a $5 million grant for “A Ground
Breaking Broadcast and Advocacy Programme to Mobilise Donor Resources
and Raise Awareness of Key Global Health Issues”.

Treatment Scheduled for
September 2007 in Tanzania
The 2nd Mass Drug Administration of the National Schistosomiasis and
Soil-transmitted helminth Control Programme in Tanzania is scheduled to
take place during September 2007.

Niger Targets the Neglected Tropical Diseases
through Mass Drug AdministrationA mass treatment campaign targeting over 6 million people for
neglected tropical diseases (NTD) was completed in Niger in the middle
of June 2007.

SCI Supports 2006 and 2007
Deworming of School Age Children in Cameroon
The first deworming campaign of 2007 was organised in 4 of the 10
provinces of Cameroon in May 2007 (Littoral, West, East and Centre),
when approximately 2 million school age children were dewormed with
mebendazole.
The Schistosomiasis Control Initiative Family is ExpandingThere are many more countries in need of assistance with their control
of neglected tropical diseases. Using its experience of the previous
five years, the SCI has an important part to play and a great deal to
offer.

Integrated Mass Treatment Of The Neglected Tropical Diseases In
NigerOn April 19th, the Ministry of Health of Niger and the USAID funded NTD-Niger Programme
launched an integrated campaign for the mass treatment of neglected
tropical diseases. Niger is the first of the five rapid start-up
countries supported by the USAID funds to initiate integrated treatment
for the control of schistosomiasis, soil-transmitted helminthes,
lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis, and trachoma.
SCI Team Honoured by the Ministry of Health in Burkina Faso
The Minister of Health of Burkina Faso,
the Hon. Alain Yoda, conferred the title of Chevalier of the Ordre National and presented the Chevalier
medal to Professor Alan Fenwick, Mr Howard Thompson, Dr Albis Gabrielli, Dr Bertrand Sellin and Mme Elisabeth Sellin.
in recognition of the contribution made by the SCI team to
the health of the Burkinabe people.
SCI awarded a grant under new USAID–funded
Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD) Control Program
SCI has been awarded a grant under the USAID–funded NTD Control
Program for programme implementation in Burkina Faso, Niger, and Uganda.
The goal of the USAID five year $100 million program is to reduce the
collective burden of five neglected tropical diseases lymphatic
filariasis (elephantiasis), onchocerciasis (river blindness),
schistosomiasis (bilharzia, snail fever), soil transmitted helminthes
(hookworm, roundworm, whipworm), and trachoma (blinding eye infection)
through an integrated treatment program. In addition to SCI, the
International Trachoma Institute (ITI) will manage integrated treatment
programs in Ghana and Mali.

NTD workshop - Kigali, Rwanda March
13-15, 2007
A donor through Geneva Global has offered three years funding for the
control of the neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) schistosomiasis,
intestinal helminths, onchocerciasis, lymphatic filariasis and trachoma
as necessary in Rwanda and Burundi. To initiate the work a planning
workshop was held from the 13th to the 15th March of 2007 in Kigali, the
capital of Rwanda.
Geneva Global Inc. Awards $8.9 Million
Grant to Global Network for Neglected Tropical Disease Control
The Global Network for Neglected Tropical Disease Control (GNNTDC)
announced today that it has been awarded an $8.9 million USD grant via
Geneva Global Inc. to fund a campaign to control and eliminate seven
neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in two East African countries, Rwanda
and Burundi.
