SCI News During 2002

December

A 4th training workshop was held in Kampala from 10 to 13 December 2002, supported by SCI, WHO, and DBL, to finalise preparations for the launch of the National Schistosomiasis Control Programme. Participants included District Health and Education Officers from 18 Districts, which have been selected for inclusion in the first round of treatment because of known high schistosomiasis prevalence levels The official launch of the Programme is still scheduled for February 28th, 2003.

A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between the Government of Uganda Ministry of Health and by Sir Richard Sykes for Imperial College, to confirm that both parties wish to collaborate over the coming 4 years in implementing a control programme.

SCI has entered into an informal agreement with the Department of Pathology, University of Cambridge, to collaborate with Vector Control Division of the Ugandan Ministry of Health on the collection of data on schistosomiasis morbidity in relevant areas of Uganda.

The first meeting of the SCI Advisory Board was held on 22 November at Imperial College London.

The board committed $940,000 to support the first year of implementation of the Government of Uganda’s Schistosomiasis Control Programme in 2003
