The 4th SCI Advisory Board Meeting - 14th October 2005
The SCI Advisory Board met on Friday October 14th
2005, to review the programmatic achievements of SCI during the last year
through September 30th 2005, to consider the scientific results
obtained in each country, and to approve the budgets for the coming financial
year for the management unit, the surveillance and monitoring unit and the
country implementation and monitoring programmes.
The
Board members included Professor Leszek Borysiewicz, Professor Roy Anderson, and
Mr. Andrew Murphy from Imperial College; Professor
Adetokunbo O. Lucas from
Nigeria; as well as Dr. Joseph Cook and Professor Richard Olds from USA
(pictured right). Dr. David Brandling-Bennett represented the Bill and Melinda
Gates Foundation, and Dr. Dirk Engels represented the World Health Organisation.
The
Director of SCI presented the current progress report and a timetable of
treatments and monitoring and evaluation scheduled for the coming two years to
complete the SCI programme in six countries. The Advisory Board noted that SCI
needs to identify sources of additional funding if the momentum for control of
schistosomiasis and intestinal helminths is to be built upon, and other
countries are to be able to implement their own programmes.
By
treating approximately 20 million people in 6 countries SCI is reaching only
about 15% of those who need treatment in Africa, and so there remains much work
to be done. |
