The SCI Advisory Board held its 1st Annual meeting on 22nd November at Imperial College London.

Among the proposals approved were:

  • The commitment of $ 940,000 to support the first year of implementation of the Government of Uganda’s Schistosomiasis Control Programme in 2003;
  • The allocation of $220,000 to support further deworming activities in schools which are recipients of daily food from the World Food Programme. The support includes drugs (praziquantel and albendazole), and funds for surveillance, training and monitoring. The SCI funds will be used to assist de-worming activities in three countries which have already carried out one round of treatment, namely, Kenya, Tanzania, and Malawi), over the next 2 years 2003 and 2004;
  • Funding for the SCI research programme to be directed by Professor Michael Reich and channelled through the Harvard Center for Population and Development Studies ($219,000).
