Procurement of drugs for schistosomiasis and intestinal helminths
control programmes in African countries
For
the control programmes in the SCI countries supplies of praziquantel (600 mg
tablets) for control of schistosomiasis and albendazole (400mg) and/or
mebendazole (500mg) against intestinal helminths will be procured.
The estimated need for 2004 is approximately 11 million praziquantel
tablets and 4 million albendazole/mebendazole tablets
Over the next 5 years it is likely that the market for SCI supported
countries will reach 75 million praziquantel and 25 million albendazole
tablets.
For the 2004 requirements, praziquantel and albendazole will be
procured centrally by Imperial College for the countries Burkina Faso,
Cameroon, Mali, Niger, Tanzania and Zambia. The following companies are
considered possibles to bid for the praziquantel and/or albendazole
requirements during 2004.
Any other companies not on this list which are interested in
supplying SCI with praziquantel (600 mg tablets) or albendazole (400 mg
tablets) are invited to examine the
procurement website at Imperial
College and submit their company profile.
For 2005 and beyond, all drug procurement will be carried out by the
countries themselves. In order to be able to respond to a tender, each
company will need to register their praziquantel and albendazole products
individually in each country. On request SCI staff are available to assist
any company in the registration process.
