SCI pre-ICOPA meeting in London August 2nd-4th
SCI took the opportunity of the ICOPA meeting to bring together all the
National Coordinators for a round up meeting on Wednesday August 2nd and
Thursday August 3rd. Each country made a presentation to the group so
that everyone was up to date with country progress towards the SCI
objectives, and difficulties and problems were discussed openly. The
future of SCI was discussed, and as usual funding issues and budgets
were presented. SCI is in its final year of the current Bill and Melinda
Gates funding, and so additional funding will be required if SCI is to
continue its work beyond 2007.
The SCI has joined a new network called the Global Network for Neglected
Tropical Disease Control (GNNTDC), based at the Sabin Institute in
Washington DC, and the Network partners† are trying to identify
potential donors for control activities. The target is to raise 1
billion dollars for a five year treatment campaign against all NTD’s.
On August 3rd in the afternoon and on August 4th an open meeting was
held which included the following presentations:

far in Burkina Faso and Uganda)
- Dr. Narcis Kabatereine, (Child health days – what they should cover)
- Dr. Simon Brooker, (Geographical targeting of integrated control)
- Dr Eve Worrall, (Costs and cost effectiveness analysis)
- Dr Claire Robertson, (Data Collection for nutritional status)
- Mr. Andy Wright, (Pharmaceutical industry perspectives)
- Dr Dirk Engels (World Health Organisation and integration of control
of Neglected Tropical Diseases NTD’s)
- Dr David Brandling Bennett (The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation – a
policy statement)
