Tribute
to Mr Ali Foum Mgeni
SCI would like to join colleagues and family in mourning the loss of
our friend and collaborator Mr Ali Foum Mgeni who sadly passed away on
the 27th December 2007 as the result of a road traffic accident in
Zanzibar.
Ali Foum played a central role in the control of schistosomiasis and
intestinal worms on Unguja Island, Zanzibar for several decades and, in
more recent years, initiated the “Kick Out Kichocho” campaign providing
annual treatment to school-aged children across the island. As the
manager of the Helminth Control Laboratory, he successfully oversaw its
recent expansion with the addition of a conference room, offices, snail
culture and research laboratories and has hosted many visiting
scientists from across the globe. His contribution in the field has been
one of total dedication to control and operational research and most of
all he was an ever cheerful friend to all who visited the island. He
will be greatly missed. We extend our deepest condolences to his family,
friends and colleagues in Zanzibar. |
